« Disneyland, Reloaded | Main | Hey! Look At This! » November 9, 2005RIP, MonorailAfter five citywide votes and countless hours of debates in taverns, public meetings and City Hall, Seattle residents finally called a halt to the embattled monorail project. This was expected, but it's still a sad day. Our city transportation problems aren't over by a long shot; all we've done is kill one specific way of helping to solve them. (sigh) At least the gas tax was upheld, which means we're not going to completely gut our infrastructure. Posted by Gavin Shearer at November 9, 2005 6:46 AM. Posted to Politics | Transit. Comments> all we've done is kill one specific way of helping to solve them But that is exactly the problem. The monorail would have served so few people, at such an exorbitant costs, that calling it a specific way to address our transportation problems is quite a stretch. Anything -- light rail, additional local buses, express buses, bike trails -- would have given us a far greater return on investment. And you didn't think I was serious when I joked about having your voter registration cancelled after you admitted to voting for the monorail...
