Off To Macworld

Macworld kicks off tomorrow, and a good chunk of the MacBU (including yours truly) are heading down to San Francisco to meet customers, take questions, and show off Office 2008.

I'll be working the Microsoft booth during the week, so if you're at the show, be sure to stop off, introduce yourself, and say hello!

(And, if you're at the show, don't forget to print your Keynote Bingo card!)

I have to say, the Macbook Air is pretty, but I'm not sure I can be convinced that I don't need an optical drive.

Unless...

I haven't heard anybody saying anything about this, but the little video guided tour of the Air which Apple has on their website says that you can install software from CD via a networked computer. Between this and Time Capsule, I'm wondering--is Apple laying the groundwork for a home server product? This is perhaps starting to look like the beginnings of a family of products centered around such a beast.

I think it's possible, but of course they'd never call it a "home server" or any such thing.

My friend Kim and I were discussing how great it would be if you could just pop a DVD into an AppleTV, at which point it makes a digital copy of the disc, ejects it, and ... you never have to touch the DVD media again. It's just available in your home, on demand, whenever you want it, from your TV to your iMac to your iPhone. Pretty kick-ass. And you could do the same thing for music. The rights are a pain in the ass, but the convenience would be astounding!
